come sail away

I've always liked the idea of owning a sailboat. It seems
so American. Think of it: warm summer nights, crisp khakis
and a light sweater, and clam bakes with the whole
Martha Stewart setup.

des œufs

I knew an artist who painted chairs to represent
different people. If I were a chair, I'd want to be
a cozy red Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair.

For years I hated anything purple. Lately I've
started to like it...and even wear it a bit.

cache-cache

Whenever I saw Matisse's paper cutouts in books
I thought they were pretty, but I never understood
how incredible they were until I saw a few in person.
These weren't typical collages--they filled 30-foot walls!

spoiled

Tomorrow we go back to the real world. No more vacation. In a way, I'm ready to get back to work and a regular routine. But that doesn't change how nice it is to be spoiled.

pleasantries

When I went to the National Gallery of Art I saw
a special exhibit of drawings and collages made
during WWII. I was surprised at how contemporary
some of them looked.

I saw this spray painted on a wall in New York
and I have no idea what it means. But I like it.

When my live orchid died last year I resorted to buying a fake one.

godhead

The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible
as man's; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not
a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit.
Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell with us.

Things seem to work out for the best,

krakatoa

"Soon after five o'clock the western horizon suddenly
flamed into a brilliant scarlet, which crimsoned sky
and clouds. People in the streets were startled at the
unwonted sight and gathered in little groups on all the
corners to gaze into the west. ...The clouds gradually
deepened to a bloody red hue, and a sanguinary flush
was on the sea."

907

In Chelsea I went to a gallery full of pure white panels--at least that's how they looked from far away. Up close I realized they were covered with rows of tiny white numbers. It was a series about time and the artist was counting the days of his life. Talk about tedious.

Today I went to the MOMA.
Sometimes I don't understand modern art.

porphyry

Now sleeps the crimson petal, now the white;
Nor waves the cypress in the palace walk;
Nor winks the gold fin in the porphyry font:
The firefly wakens: waken thou with me.

serenity

We arrived in Maryland tonight. I took a walk around the block with my inlaws and realized just how beautiful it is here. A perfect golden moon greeted us as we turned onto Hughes Road and I thought,
"I never want to go back West again."
